“I know it’s bad luck for the groom to see his bride before the ceremony, but you aren’t in your dress yet, so this doesn’t count.”

I turned my head at the sound of Cooper’s voice. He was sauntering toward me with a small bowl of fruit salad. “Here,” he added, holding the bowl out to me. “You’re going to be on your feet all day, so you’ll need some energy.”

I gingerly accepted the food and turned back toward the window. The weather outside was cold and gloomy, like my mood. The sky was thick with gray clouds, rain was drizzling softly on the grass outside, and the distant waters of Long Island Sound were black and choppy.

“It’s raining,” I said, glancing at Cooper. “What if it stays like this all day?”

His lips turned up in a ghost of a smile. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” he said. “But we’re not postponing. I checked the weather report, and it’s only raining this morning. It should clear up within the next thirty minutes.”

I sighed inwardly and returned my attention to the raindrops sliding down the windowpane. I wished the nasty weather would keep up, and I wished Cori’s superstition about rain and bad luck would hold up as well. Only for Cooper, though. It would be nice if he experienced some terrible luck today. He could be struck by lightning as soon as he stepped out the front door, or he could trip on the stairs before he even made it outside, snapping his spine and cracking his skull.

“When you’ve finished your breakfast, go and put some clothes and shoes on,” he said, casting his eyes over my rumpled pajamas. “Anything will do, because you’ll be changing when we get there anyway.”

Twenty minutes later, I followed Cooper downstairs, where his mother Lily was waiting with Carla and Jessica. Jessica had been assigned the flower girl role for today’s ceremony, and she was already in a pale pink dress with matching shoes and a flower-crown headband. A wicker basket filled with rose petals dangled from her left arm.

“You’re going to be in the car with us,” Lily said, smiling at me. “Girls only.”

“Will there be someone at the place who can do my hair?” Carla asked, self-consciously touching the back of her head. “I need it curled.”

Cooper smiled at her. “Yes, a hair stylist will be there for you,” he said. He glanced at his watch. “We should head off soon.”

He kissed the top of my head before muttering his goodbyes and striding out the door. I left a moment later with Lily, Carla, and Jessica, stomach churning.

Jessica held my hand in the back of the car, smiling bravely at me, but it did nothing to raise my spirits. How could it? A few hours from now, I’d be married to a monster.

Our driver dropped us off at a marina half an hour later, and a guide led us toward the boarding area for a sleek black mega-yacht.

Having the wedding out on the water was Cooper’s idea.
